Recirculating models are designed to be plumbed externally or run in-sump as well. They can be run by by plumbing you overflow pipes directly to the inlet of the skimmer or by plumbing a pump from the sump to feed the skimmer.

The beckett nozzle of these external protein skimmers allows them to draw in large amounts of air when fed with a powerful pump. They are not supplied with a pump but it is recommended to put on an OTP-5000 or better on either model.
